Rylee’s First “major” Illness
Rylee is 11 months and 3 weeks old. She gave me the scare of my life last week. Tuesday morning I dropped her off before work. She had a fever of 101.4. Gave her some Tylenol and it went away.
Wednesday afternoon I picked her up and she was covered in a rash and coughing too. My poor baby. I called the clinic and they said bring her in. When I got there, she had a fever again and her oxygen level was low. The doctor tool a look at her and said that she had HAND, FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE. It is a virus that causes blistering in those areas. That was also causing an ear infection and the congestion and coughing. She prescribed some stuff and told her to come back the following day for a follow up.
The next morning her breathing was getting worse. She stayed with Nana while I went to court to settle the parenting plan with her dad. By the time that I got back (with her dad) she was miserable. I took her home for a nap and packed her up to go back to the doctor. Dad went home. I took her in and doctor said that she needed to go to the ER. Her breathing was labored and she tested POS for RSV. Panic immediately set in. I took her down to the ER. Char met me there. I had not even packed a diaper bag. I was expecting a simple follow up visit. She was a lifesaver. Afterall, what do you do with a one year old to keep them pacified in a hospital. We took turns keeping her happy. Finally…. The doctor came in and said that she could go home. She was eating and drinking and her oxygen levels had come up. He said that if she worsened or refused to eat, to bring her back. THANK GOD!
I took her home.
That brings us to Friday. Scariest day of all. By the time Rylee got up, her fever was up and she was refusing food. She was having a hard time breathing and was coughing to gasp for air. Back to the doctor we went. At the doctor’s office, the did a breathing treatment and right away, she drank a bottle. She was prescribed breathing treatments every 6 hours until she is better. So, we have continued that. She is still fighting a fever and still sleeping with me at night. This virus can last up to 21 days. So, I’m trying to be patient. It’s hard coming back to work today knowing that she is still sick. But, she is in good hands.
I had really hoped that her dad would come down even one day to help out knowing that she was sick. But, nope. He was off 4 days and couldn’t spare 1 day to comfort his baby girl. Shame. Good thing I have enough love for 10 people. ;) We take it day by day.
